Wearing Black with Grace and Style
“Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.” Coco Chanel, Chanel
Black is a wonderful color – it is classy, sensual and totally versatile. Black is always in season. It is slimming. Black can be formal, playful or dark and mysterious. Whether at your office, feeling Gothic or off to a formal affair, there are many ways to make the most of an onyx outfit. “I think if you choose to mix black with the right colors, you can make it less severe and look totally on trend,” says celebrity stylist Sam Saboura. ”It’s about being a little ladylike and a little edgy at the same time.”
“Fashion changes, but style endures.” Coco Chanel
The Little Black Dress
The little black dress was introduced by Coco Chanel in the 20’s. With the right accessories, makeup and hairstyle, you can be ready for a room full of lawyers and a cocktail party all without changing clothes. When picking out a dress, avoid too short, too clingy or too much cleavage. Pick a dress that can transition well without making you look like a nun. Ruffles and lace, in moderation, can feminize a dress without being too trashy.
“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Coco Chanel
Wearing the right shoes is important when using black. Although black shoes can go with nearly every outfit, that does not mean you can wear any pair of black shoes. Big black shoes on a small frame can look clunky and make your feet look extra big! Small, stylish flats can make your feet look smaller and daintier. Stilettos should be worn with caution – wearing them out for a few hours is fine, wearing them all day at a job where you are running around is cruel and unusual punishment. Find a balance in your activities, function and style when picking out black shoes.
“I wanted to give a woman comfortable clothes that would flow with her body. A woman is closest to being naked when she is well-dressed.” Coco Chanel
Classy pieces with black clothing are metals, pearls, diamonds and other gems. The more simple and glittery, the classier it will look. Timeless and classic, you can’t go wrong with these pieces of jewelry.
Purses and Bags
When you pick a purse to go with your black ensemble, you will want to pick something that looks nice. Your clothing will make that hangbag stand out even further. It doesn’t have to match the shoes or other accessories but it should match well your chosen color palette.
Try a dazzling or sparkling clutch to glam up your dress.
