Modifying The World On Earth Day
As you may already know, today is Earth Day. Today we thought we’d put together a fun little post that would give you some tips to better take care of our environment. After all, must sleep in the bed we make.
1. Throw your gum in the garbage
Ever see those round black spots on sidewalks and roads? Those are from people who carelessly threw their gum out. Did you know that in Singapore it’s illegal to chew gum? If you’re caught chewing gum, then the police will actually give you a whooping with a little twig branch that they carry around. (You can’t even buy gum in country) This is one of the reasons that tourists always say that Singapore is one of the world’s prettiest countries.
Let’s all do our part to make America look prettier as well.
2. Take advantage of your local recycling program
Many cities in the US will provide your house with a green bin of some sort. How hard is it to take a few seconds every time and put the stuff that can be recycled into the bin?
Some people don’t know this, but you can actually make money by recycling cans, bottles, and metal. Most glass bottles will show a recyclable symbol and tell you how much you can get for it. For example, the CocaCola glass bottles can give you 5 cents per bottle.
This is the reason you see homeless people collecting trash.
3. Do your part to eliminate frivolous trash
If you’re not going to take the time to recycle, at least take the time to purchase less of the things that don’t biodegrade. (This term refers to something that is capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms.)
Far too many people buy plastic water bottles, plastic cups, forks, knives and plates. This is contributing to our landfills. Some sources say that it can take up to 450 years for a piece of plastic to biodegrade. Even George Washington Carver would agree.
4. Fix that darn water leak
I found a pretty sweet calculator that shows you how much water you could be wasting from 1 faucet leak in your house. If that one faucet leaks 1 time per minute, you would waste 34 gallons of water in a year!
Take a minute and call a repairman. Get that water leak fixed.
