Miss Cherry Martini’s Interview
This tattooed Girl with Black Goth Hair surrounds herself with things all dark and beautiful. She spends her days in her studio as a full-time Illustrator, making her mark on the world. Specializing in Clothing Labels and Homewares, her art is sure to capture your ghoulish imagination! In her work, you’ll find yourself questioning your childhood when you see The Little Mermaid all tatted up, or Elsa enjoying a slushie (Jeez, why didn’t Elsa open up a slushie business instead of building a huge freaking castle out of ice and shutting out the world? Would’ve been much more effective and still a great story line in our opinion…) Not convinced to read on yet? If I told you she wants a pet Velociraptor would you be intrigued? Well she does. Boom. Read on.
When was the first moment you decided you wanted to be an artist?
When i was a child growing up! I was really inspired by Disney and would watch the “Makings of” section as much as i would the Film! I loved the Pencil animation!
Where do you find your inspiration?
All over the place! From Fashion, to Pop culture, toys, anime’s, Horror and oddities, JAPAN! Oh and Video Games!I have to surround myself with eye candy at all times! My studio looks like a Japanese toy store and the rest of my house is something out of the Addams Family! Oddities and antiques Galore!
We’re guessing her house has the same feel as her website, totally awesome!
If you could work with another artist, who would it be?
Simon Morse, my Artist Inspiration growing up! He has mad skills and is a fellow Kiwi like myself! I grew up wearing his clothing designs and reading his comic books! Now we are actually mates and am the lucky wearer of one of his kick arse tattoos that he designed for me at the International NZ Tattoo Expo back in 2010. Yay me.
What has been the best moment in your career?
Hmmm, I have Many!!! From my First Magazine, to my first clothing label designs, to working for Moose Toys! The whole experience has been kick arse!
What is your ideal day?
Inside or outside work? lol. I love to get out of the studio once and a while, go adventuring! Go see some wildlife, get my camera out! I also love going to Nerd Conventions! Spending a day at the Tattoo Shop, Or simply having a drink with friends.
Who is your role model?
Morticia Addams, lol. Crossed with cussing like a Sailor lol. She’s perfection and has the perfect life and family.
If you could do anything, what would it be?
Id love to start children’s books! Crazy Alt ones! Also want to start my very own Exclusive MCM label! That’s aside from one day possibly owning a pet Velociraptor…
Why do you create art?
Well It started out as a way of escape, to vent, to outpour emotion….I had a difficult upbringing and a bad teenage-hood…It was my Diary…So my images used to be tragically sad…Now my art though dark, is quite happy!!! Guess life is good! haha <3
What art do you most identify with?
Lots! From Dark Lowbrow and alternative to Japanese Kawaii Art! I love sexy girls too lol Pinups to hauntingly beautiful images…
How has your art changed throughout your life?
Well aside from looking sad to happy, its also gone from Traditional to Digital! Its strange to pick up a pencil these days and when i do i find my style reverts back to my old school style! lol
What is your dream project?
hmmmm, I would love to have Vinyl Toys of my characters! Limited Edition! Eeekkkkk!!!
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
